We are now moving into deep winter, when light is at a minimum and the outdoors is called cold and unwelcoming. This is the time of year when our ancestors took a break from their farming duties for a few months, hunkered down around a fire and told stories.

When we disconnected from nature and became an industrialized society, we lost that rhythm of living.

But our bodies remember the thousands of years when we were an agrarian society.

In ancient times winter was a time of resting before the explosion of new energy in the spring.

Now, however, we expect ourselves to keep the same all year round. So if you find yourself feeling slower and sluggish, it might be because it is winter season.

This year as many of us work from home, there is no separation between the outside world of work and the private world of home and family.  This produces an extra layer of stress.

Laughter is one of the most potent weapons against stress and depression.

That’s true whether the feeling is sadness or anger.  Laughter alters the biochemistry of the brain in powerful ways. It releases beneficial hormones like endorphins and serotonin. And it reduces the level of stress hormones such as cortisol, epinephrine,  and adrenaline.
