When I first studied Vedic Astrology, one of the great ‘Ah-ha’ moments I had was its definition of my incarnational life purpose.
The whole of our chart depicts our incarnational life purpose, of course, but quintessentially, that great purpose is defined by the position of the Nodes of the Moon in our Vedic birth chart.
In Vedic astrology, the Nodes of the Moon are said to have a sort of demon energy. They are the eclipse points. The North Node is called Rahu. The South Node, always opposite it, is called Ketu. Because they are eclipse energies, the Nodes of the Moon are cut off from connection with the divine energies of the Sun and the Moon and other planets, but because vedic Astrology is tantric, it can of course supremely use this eclipse energy to help us spiritually to find light out of darkness, and discover our incarnational life purpose thereby! So, we define our incarnational life purpose in Vedic Astrology in terms of the positions of the Nodes of the Moon in our Vedic birth chart: by House, by Sign, by planets aspecting the Nodes, and of course applying all the vastness of the techniques of vedic astrology to this task; not forgetting also using the position of the Nodes of the moon in the infinitely valid and wonderful 27-sign Lunar Zodiac of Vedic Astrology as well: the 27 Nakshatras.
And then I got more ‘ah-ha’ moments as I unified this with the definition of my incarnational life purpose offered by the branch of Western Astrology called Evolutionary Astrology. I had studied this before, particularly form Martin Schulman. So, in Western Evolutionary Astrology too, the positions of the Nodes of the Moon: the North Node and the South Node, are key to understanding how our past lives manifest in this life and show us the lessons and life purpose our Soul chose this time. Again, our incarnational life purpose is analysed according to the Houses, Signs and aspects to the nodes in our birth chart, with a special emphasis on planets square the nodes as a ‘missed step’ of learning in previous life. Pluto is also very important in this study. But whereas Vedic Astrology uses the Sidereal Zodiac which is anchored to the stars, Western Astrology uses the Tropical Zodiac which moves against the background of the stars because the Tropical Zodiac takes its source as the position of the Sun on the day of the vernal Equinox, and so it is diverging from the position of Vedic Astrology’s Sidereal Zodiac by a degree every 72 years, and because it is sun sign based, it depicts our egoic psychology. So, in terms of life purpose, western astrology depicts how we will experience our life purpose psychologically, whereas vedic Astrology depicts it in terms of the circumstances we will attract at birth and in unfoldment through time in our lives, including what sort of personality this will attract, but recognising that that personality is not ultimately real. We need a personality. But it is just a boat to get us to the other side of the river. In this analogy, the other side of the river is our enlightened perception of our incarnational life purpose, and indeed our enlightened perception of the way in which the nature of material reality, our mind, emotions and consciousness are all to be understood. Western astrology makes such wonderful and useful contributions as psychodynamic astrology: psychodynamic astrology’s insights into our egoic psychological makeup. You can learn to use such worthwhile techniques as psychosynthesis, psychosynthesis roleplay and individuation. You can gain lightning illumination from ‘Nature v Nurture’ analysis. It is so valuable also to work out the message of western ‘evolutionary astrology’ on the effects of previous lives on our psychological drives, and on our egoic psychology.

My personal incarnational life purpose, as defined by Vedic astrology, is that I have North Node Rahu in my 10th House in Aries, in Ashwini Lunar Sign, and I have South Node Ketu in my 4th House Libra, which is occupied also by Sun and Mercury. So, in terms of my Vedic Astrology which uses the Sidereal Zodiac, where incarnational life purpose is defined most centrally in Vedic Astrology by the position of the Nodes of the Moon in our birth chart, I have Ketu occupying my 4th House. This means that I shall be denied mother and roots and ancestral inheritance. North Node Rahu in my Vedic chart is in my 10th House in Aries. So, this means that because I was denied recognition and made invisible by mother (4th House Ketu) I am impelled across my birth chart to my North node Rahu which is in the 10th House of Career and Standing in the World. There I shall seek recognition, but of course with all the risks and delusions of Rahu.
Now, the contribution of Western Evolutionary Astrology to this understanding is crucial. In my Western astrology using the Tropical Zodiac, my North Node is in the sign of Taurus in the 10th House of career. This means that I will feel impelled across my birth chart to find Value (Taurus), because of the psychological impact of my mothering, which so very badly devalued me. But the point is, you have to learn that you can never actually find value through career and status in this world. You have to learn that. The only way you can find value is to learn how to heal and so value yourself. So, this is one of the key life-purpose messages of my Western Evolutionary Astrology.

The teaching is that the South Node is where we land in this life from the lessons left over from our previous life, which our Soul chose for us to work with this time. Ketu is thus seen as the ‘camp of the occupying army’. Rahu, the North Node, by contrast, is seen as the direction our soul throws us in this life: the direction of the lessons we are here to learn. Rahu is thus the advancing army. Now, the point of this image, is that both of these Nodes, Ketu and Rahu, they are both demon energies. The energy of Rahu is perforce driven and obsessional, this is the energy needed to impel us across our chart to get to the goal of lessons learned! But in fact, Rahu’s energies are depicted as surrounded by the smoke of illusions and they can manifest very malefically as bad gurus, etc! So, we have to purify the energy of Rahu, if we are ever to arrive at the destination he points to!
The energy of Ketu is different. Ketu dissolves or ruins what he touches, but for spiritual benefits, gains and purposes, if only we can see his shocking sudden revelations rightly! Ketu’s energy is intense and glaring, warrior-like and inhuman.
So, I hope I have conveyed to you the great benefit of incarnational life purpose study from this tiny slice of example. You can learn in depth about your own personal Incarnational Life Purpose by enrolling on this option within my Astrology Mini-Courses (or of course by having one of my readings or by studying one of my full courses).
It is obviously such an important question to learn to understand. Can we always learn to understand it in one lifetime? Well, doing my Mini-Course will certainly help you greatly. The question under focus is: Why are you here? Yes: You personally! This supremely worthwhile and essential topic is one of the Expert Astrology Mini-Courses I offer.
My Astrology Mini-Courses are powerful, caring and deeply learned worldwide courses. They are such good value! Whether you have just basic astrological knowledge, or whether you are highly proficient in astrological techniques in Vedic astrology and/or Western Astrology, this ‘Incarnational Life Purpose’ Astrology Mini-Course gives you such a blessed and needed opportunity to take an in-depth study on the crucial and central theme in your life. I am well used to working with people who are highly trained in astrological techniques as well as those who are pretty-well beginners.
You will find I am completely supportive, and extremely well-versed in both Western and Vedic Astrological techniques. Genuinely, I can take your study to any depth you wish to go to at this stage. You can emphasise Vedic Astrology OR Western Astrology OR I support you in combining both!
So, how do we do that?
Well, remember, the teaching of Vedic Astrology of this unique, acute and powerful perception, but on its own has little value. Perception techniques can be parroted. They can involve wallowing in the past. They can be deracinated mentalism. They can be merciless to the point of being ‘ranted formula’ and useless Remedies. So, the point is I do feel that the fullest use of Jyotish is actually its combination with healing and empowerment approaches. I would say that I feel the Vedic remedies are mostly formulaic and legalistic. I do feel that a new consciousness is needed in Vedic Astrology in the area of the purpose of Vedic Astrology and ‘remedies’; I replace them often with healing and empowerment approaches.
Of course, the Vedic paradigm most definitely does wonderfully include effective and sublime management of the consciousness and the Mind. It can be of such great value also to manage and monitor and stabilise our mind through mantra. Though it must be noted that I do feel that Mantra can lead to a robotic life drained of expression and outworking of the essential spark that drove our soul to incarnate in the particular circumstances of this existence, and so I would say that uncreative use of mantra can result in denial of potential.
Western astrology, even when expert, can have its profound limitation too: it can be a too cerebral psychologising.
So, the Healing approaches I personally use include vision journeying, art work, embodiment, shamanic healing and Emotional Freedom Technique to provide healing and transformation.
I work in conjunction with my partner Maggie Pashley who offers a vast range of worldwide healing modalities, and you can work face to face with both of us at our Healing Centre and airbnb in the West of Ireland.
Actually, the supreme perception of both Vedic Astrology and Western Astrology does need to be used as a Gateway to Healing and Empowerment.
So, for this reason, in all my worldwide courses and readings, i always offer gateways of healing and empowerment to deal with the perceptions about your life that Vedic astrology so wonderfully offers.
So, I hope this very brief presentation of the contribution of both Vedic and western astrology has been of value to you, and will serve to show the great benefit of studying the topic of your incarnational life purpose. It would be great to work with you.
I hope you will consider enrolling on one of my Vedic Astrology worldwide courses. These are very caring and well-resourced and they are enthusiastically taught. There’s opportunity for western astrology cross-over if you wish. Always the interpretation is non-formulaic. Always the perception you gain is geared to healing and empowerment.
