Welcome to our Western Astrology Foundation course. This course is very special. It is the Foundation Part 1 Course of our two-part Psychodynamic and Evolutionary Western Astrology Course.
Like all our courses, our Western Astrology course is geared to Western-Vedic astrology cross-over.
Planets Sun to Saturn are covered in this Part 1 of the Western Astrology Course; planets Uranus to Chiron plus the Nodes of the Moon are covered in the part 2 of the Western Astrology Course.
Psychodynamic astrology assesses the nature and characteristics of the ‘egoic personality’ that we have in this life.
Very importantly it looks at our subpersonalities by analysing our ‘chart aspect shapes’.
It states how our awareness of our egoic personality will unfold in our life in terms of accurate and powerful predictive age points, plus the usual transits and progressions.
We have to have an ‘egoic personality’ in order to live this life. But we also have to realise that it is not the truth of us, and that we need to perceive its strengths and also its limitations, if we are also able to go beyond it and connect to Divine Source.
We are here to learn to reduce our negative karmas and habits, to raise our Consciousness and to maximise our expression of our positive sparks and talents. We are here to us our earthly life to connect to the Divine. The combination of Vedic with Western Astrology can provide vastly useful pointers to this sacred task.
Modern Western psychodynamic astrology, when expertly interpreted, accurately depicts our psychological make-up, the sub-personalities within us and issues of individuation and wholeness. It encompasses our sub-personalities and psychosynthesis and also understanding of nature versus nurture’ agendas in our lives. Modern Western Astrology also includes a dimension of Evolutionary Astrology: a statement of how past life scripts influence this life, and this is evaluated in terms of the psychological results of past live scripts.
Vedic astrology which is far more ancient, powerful and accurately identifies the journey of the soul. It identifies the journey we were born to undertake. It describes the physical and psycho-mental circumstances we will attract into our lives as fates for us to work with (including our ‘personality’. Vedic astrology asserts that these fates are chosen with reference to past karmas that have accrued in previous lives. Some of these karmas are fixed (drida): there is little we can do about them: we need to experience them =for a life-time in order to make the growth we need to undertake; other of our karmas are not fixed (adrida) – these we can learn to modify or eliminate or ‘burn’.
Zodiacs:
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (start point 0 deg tropical Aries: where the Sun is on the first day of Spring).
Vedic Astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (start point 0 deg sidereal Aries which is anchored to a fixed star).
As the western tropical zodiac moves a degree every 72 years against the backdrop of the stars, the two zodiacs are currently 24 degrees apart). Tropical Zodiac with Lahiri Ayanamsha gives the best results.
We study all the western planets of: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, North Node, South Node, and you are welcome to go into Vedic – Western Astrology crossover if you wish. The Course also studies how to interpret Signs, Houses, Aspects, Hemispheres, Elements and Modalities in your birth chart. We seek to identify past life scripts and the nature of your Existential Wound: Chiron, the Wounded Healer. We study how each planet in our chart has its ‘divine nature’ filtered through ‘filters’ of Sign, House and Aspects in a person’s birth chart. And in addition to these usual components of Western Astrology Chart Interpretation, we also study more specifically psychodynamic themes in the chart. These include:
Chart Aspect Shapes
We all have chart aspect shapes in your chart. Chart aspect shapes are a wonderful and powerful guide to our deepest psychological motivations. They identify what parts of our personality work easily together, and which parts are so different that it is hard to reconcile one with the other. In other words, they chart and define our egoic psychology.
In particular, chart aspect shapes analysis is excellent for identifying which parts of us are split off: what parts act as ‘unaspected sub-personalities. The need is to know even the split-off parts of ourselves, so that we will not be driven by unconscious denied parts, so that we will not swing wildly from one persona to another, bewildering ourselves and those around us.
This processes of unifying our Self is called ‘individuation’ the principle method used in achieving individuation is called ‘psychosynthesis’.
If there are few or no aspect lines running from one of our planets to the other planets in our chart, it will constitute and Unaspected Sub-personality. Sometimes, of course it is two planets that form the unaspected subpersonality: they aspect each other, but not the rest of the chart (or the subpersonality can be three or four cut off planets). Having an unaspected sub-personality means that sometimes you may come over over-powerfully with that energy to other people, and yet have no real idea of how powerfully you are coming across with those characteristics; you might feel you are being too weak – or vice versa.
But it also means that that energy-principle is unconnected to the rest of you. It is an unaspected sub-personality. You will find it difficult to assess. It could be the tail that wags the dog. It could take over your life. At other times you will be unable to access and connect to its energy at all.
We need to recognise and understand our unaspected sub-personalities. This can be done through the method of role-play psychosynthesis. It is linked to the principle of ‘Individuation’ in the psychology of Asaglione.
Nature versus Nurture
We will also look at the very important and key issue of ‘Nature versus Nurture’ in your life: Planets in signs are our inherited nature. Planets in houses are our nurture or upbringing. This is the ‘nature versus nurture’ debate. The Question is: Who are we: our nature or our nurture? Our earliest upbringing/nurture is especially influential in altering our nature. The nature v. nurture effect is identified in terms of the balances of your modalities and elements. Modalities are ways of going about things; elements are qualities of being.
Evolutionary Astrology assesses the Karmic nature and manifestation of each of our planets, the past life karmas that are being expressed and can be worked with. It identifies our incarnational life purpose this lifetime. Indeed I offer a Past Life journey audio to assist in this facet of this course. This part of the course is so illuminating and worthwhile.
Predictive Unfoldment: Within this course, in addition to teaching transits and progressions, We also teach two wonderful Predictive Age Points within psychodynamic Western Astrology, using Megastar software. There is an Individuation Age Point which circumnavigates the chart in 72 years, starting from the ascendant and moving counter-clockwise. It is an indicator of the energies we will pass through in our journey to potential individuation, in our egoic psychological unfoldment, learning about all the parts of our egoic psychological identity, and learning how to manage them and fulfill their highest potential. This Individuation Age Point moves counter-clockwise from the Ascendant passing through the houses and signs as it progresses. This Individuation Age Point does not only pass through the signs and houses in your natal chart, it also forms aspects to the planets in your natal chart as it progresses, thus activating experiences in your life relating to your scripts for the energies of that planet.
There is also a ‘Nodal Age Point’ which charts the call from your soul to you from the astral. The Nodal Age Point charts your soul’s call to you through dreams, subliminality, synchronicity, intuitions, impulses and visions. The nodal Age Point starts from the position of the North Node of the Moon at the moment you were born. It circumnavigates the rim of your chart clockwise, thus passing at predictable dates through your signs, houses and in aspect to your planets. Fascinatingly the Nodal Age Point so often declares a similar strand to your Vedic Predictive astrology.

Planets Sun to Saturn are covered in Part 1 of the Course; planets Uranus to Chiron plus the Nodes of the Moon are covered in part 2 of the Course. Part 2 also offers teaching in a vast range of more advanced interpretation techniques. You complete two assignments for each module: a study of each planet in your chart and mine. As you study each planet in turn, you develop your understanding of the tools of astrological analysis: signs, houses, aspects, psychological explorations such as psychosynthesis sub-personality work, etc. and we are careful to be aware of the level of consciousness of the analysis.
