What are the Nakshatras?
Vedic astrology also uses an even more ancient zodiac as well as the traditional twelve Sun Signs sidereal zodiac: this is the immeasurably powerful lunar zodiac of 27 signs: The Nakshatras.
The Nakshatras depict our realities, our Mind and our emotional natures in a magical and dream time way that is pre-solar, pre-logical and pre-linear, and in a way that is hugely accurate, powerful and meaningful. It is such an eye-opener when you know and understand the nature of the Nakshatra in which each of your planets fall in your Vedic birth chart. Once you know this, you can manage your life better, purify, heal and empower yourself.
These Nakshatras are in fact lunar signs. The positions of the lunar signs were more easily visible to ancient astrologers because they are quite simply the position of the Moon in the heavens on each of the 27.3 days the Moon takes to orbit the Earth against the backdrop of the stars.
The Nakshatras identify our root scripts and state of consciousness, our root motivations and drives. Each of them has a ruling deity, a ruling planet, a gender-polarity and a power animal that can be used for many purposes of understanding, including the identification of the best marriage partner for you. They cross relate to key frameworks for understanding such as Gunas/Quality of Mind, Ayurvedic Dosha, orientation such as Deva or Rakshasha, body Part and Varna or occupational typology. They are divided into groups of qualities such as Fixed, Sharp and Dreadful, Fierce and severe, and Soft, mild and tender plus others.
An Example Nakshatra:
To help you get a picture of the nature of a Nakshatra, and the wonder of being able to sum up a person once you know their Nakshatras, here is a very simple example write-up for one of them: Here’s a description for Pushyami:
This is the 8th Nakshatra, and it is situated within the sign of Vedic Cancer.
Pushyami individuals all seem to be ‘pushy’. Until they understand themselves better, they can tend to over-pacing and they tend to push themselves forward overmuch in groups. They can even be over-talkative, attention-seeking and a zealot. They can tend to be swamping and over-expansionary: Jupiter is exalted in their sign, although it is ruled by Saturn.
In fact their energy is quite martial, and so their caste is Kshatriya or Warrior. But in fact, they are the aggressive soldier who also dotes on his wife and family. They have such difficult contradictions. And their expansionary contradictoriness runs them inescapably into (fated) encounter with the Nakshatra Ruler: Lord Sani, Saturn, Lord of Karma. The divine purpose of this is to inculcate a balance between expansion and restriction stemming from the growth in the soul’s realisation that the present incarnation is but a part in the greater cycle, involving grudging acceptance that maturation demands realisation that this life must necessarily involve a karmic and limited destiny.
This fits in with the Pushyami ‘power animal’ of the Ram or ‘lead goat’ assigned to them. But in fact, this is a front. It can mask or over-compensate often for different qualities behind the ‘front’. They need to purify this energy if they are to relate to others truly. Indeed, the pushiness thinly masks hurt sensitivity and clinging possessiveness. In fact at their core, the temperament of Pushyami is Deva – angelic/loving and (over-) accommodating. They are sensitive to landscape/setting, and must be in or live in the place that is right for them. They are dutiful and loyal, conservative and traditional (the Saturn rulership) and they do tend to develop strong religious conviction and expression. They value gaining wisdom and enjoy the good things in life.
Also, although they push themselves forwards and over-pace, in fact they are also very nurturing and caring, and can even over-nurture, and even do this at the expense of losing themselves. Their devotion can turn to submission then leaving them open to being a martyr or victim, so they then get terribly defrauded by believing in the wrong people. Cancer is a sign of selfless love, but this needs to be expressed with wisdom, experience and maturity. They will come strongly to the defense of something or someone they believe in. The over-nurturing is part of the over-pacing: ‘belt and braces’! And yet, contrary-wise, they like to also be quite independent.
This is not an easy nakshatra for marriage, therefore, despite their nurturing, duty and loyalty. This is not only because of the tension they put themselves through, but also because they are reputed to be drawn to partners with problems (often they are drawn to these because of the opportunity to ‘save’). Their tensions also cause tension for the partner. Pushyamis are benevolent so long as the other people are doing what the Pushyami wants them to do! The over-nurturing has a controlling aspect to it!
Their dutifulness and nurture tend to draw them to service roles and caring roles, educational and humanitarian functions and religious observance. They value becoming knowledgeable. They are motivated to remove difficulties or avoid trouble.
Pushya and Rohini are deemed to bring abundance, but in Pushyami’s case this depends on other things, not least the position and standing of Saturn in the birth chart.
Physically they are often stocky and tend to over-weight. They are said to be characterised by a mole on the left chest.

In Part 1 of this course, you receive full charts at the outset and a very full start information document about each Nakshatras’ qualities and characteristics, plus a reading list, and there’s a video and a course document for each Nakshatra for you to review. You need to complete Part 1 first, so that we can ensure that we have the highest and fullest grasp on the state of each Nakshatras in our chart, so that we can make fully accurate declarations applying the Nakshatra Interpretation Techniques in the next level of our course: Part 2.
In the Level 1 course, you work through each of the 27 Nakshatras one by one, receiving a presentation document and video link, learning the characteristics of each.
You study each Nakshatra with reference to two charts: yours and your Tutor’s. Because this course is rooted in the charts of two flesh and blood people, this keeps the work caring, grounded and authentic.
Natal study of the Nakshatras: So, what you do is you analyse the implications for each of the planets in our two charts in the light of the Nakshatras they occupy. What does this mean for our personality, for our life, for our destiny? How will it affect our emotional natures and consciousness arising therefrom? What steps can we take to heal and empower?
And, as ever with our courses, if you wish to incorporate some cross-over into your western astrology, that is fine, and we fully support and guide you in this.
Nakshatras Course Part 2:
In Part 2 of this course, you receive the statement for the first of the dedicated techniques of Nakshatra Analysis, and then further statements as we study these Nakshatra Analysis Techniques, one after the other, and you apply each of these powerful and illuminating techniques to each of our charts.
These techniques are very powerful illumination indeed. They transform your astrological understanding. They transform our life.
The Part 2 methods course material, is sent to you in sections, once study of each of the Nakshatras in Part 1 is completed. This is because to achieve firm foundation, we have to work through all of 27 Nakshatras, and really deeply learn them and how we relate to them, first. This creates a study that is orderly, steady and harmonious in its pace, and which is profound, where mind achieves steady grounded knowledge of the system. This way we produce produce orderly, sound, depth, grounded learning, with proper attention to basics first, and sound respect for the profound nature of the Vedic consciousness.
To give you an idea of a few of the Nakshatra Techniques, here is some detail of some of these Techniques:
Health Astrology: The Nakshatras can also be used to predict our health and sickness through our life. If you place the Nakshatra the Moon occupied at the moment you were born at the crown of your head, and then place the rest of the 27 Nakshatras in a sequence over the parts of your body, the most valuable guidance as to your health propensities can be gained.
Nakshatra Body Parts System: Drawing your Narachakra is a most thought provoking mapping of your individual health astrology.
Derived Nakshatra Tables: The greatest understanding your destiny and how people will manifest in your life, can come from the Navtara and Nadi Nakshatra systems. These can add such a lot to your understanding of your life scripts and destiny, and it can provide such a clear gateway to raising your level of consciousness, if you apply the derived nakshatra principles.
To give a very small example of the Navtara analysis system, in addition to the natural qualities of the sequence of nakshatras, with navtara, you can take into account an ‘overlay quality’ derived by counting from your Janma nakshatra (the nakshtra the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth), so, for example, with natal Moon in Vedic or sidereal Pisces, the second nakshatra is Ashwini (where the second nakshatra carries the quality of sampat or wealth) but the fifth nakshatra counting from my Moon is Rohini carrying the quality of Pratyak (struggle, challenge and revile). These systems are of such great value to our natal, predictive and relationship astrology. The really do add such powerful dimensions of declaration and insight.
Moving on to the Nadi Nakshatras analysis system, this too gives such powerful declaration and understanding – and can be used as a sure foundation for healing and empowerment work:
Janma – The Nakshatra occupied by the Moon in our Vedic birth chart. Nadi Nakshatras count from Janma inclusively:
1. Jati 4th Our Community, Creed, family well-being.
2. Matru 8th Mother Issues.
3. Karma 10th Our Career Issues. Awareness of work, power and position.
4. Sanghatika 16th Close associations that often challenge or hurt.
5. Samudaya 18th Indication of our manifestation of positive karma from past life. Final Result.
6. Aadhana 19TH Creativity and Father issues. Reasons for rebirth, guru, dharma issues.
7. Vinasha 23rd Ruin, annihilation and destruction. dissolution, final karma, finishing things.
8. Manasa 25th Our Default State of Consciousness. mentality, mental strengths, obsessions.
9. Abhishekha 27th Power and Achievement. Coronation.
The Nakshatras have been used to give accurate predictions since the earliest ages. There were no signs (rashis) in the age of Ramayana and Mahabharata; they used the Nakshatras for predictions. Transits were assessed using this technique. The qualities of each Nakshatra are many-facetted, and thus we enter a rich world of interweaving vision and energies.
