Achieving your Goals in the New Year by Elizabeth Hendricks

We are coming into a whole new year, hopefully one that will be better than the last two years of constant stress due to Covid.

At the beginning of the year many of us make New Year’s resolutions for things we want to change about ourselves or things we want to accomplish.

Those resolutions last for a few days or a few months, until one day we notice we aren’t doing them anymore. This is true whether we’re trying to lose weight, get in shape, or change some other aspect of our personality.

Of course, resolutions are a wonderful idea. The problem isn’t in making the resolution, it’s in keeping the resolution and following through day after day.

Consistency is one of the hardest forms of self-discipline many people take on.

It can be especially hard if you are creative because your mind is always pulling you into new avenues and it’s easy to lose track of an old goal.

So how can we make sure we accomplish a goal?

One of the most effective ways is to start with tiny goals that are easy or easier to attain. All twelve-step programs know the wisdom of this approach. Instead of saying I will never have another cigarette, one says “I won’t smoke for the next 30 minutes.” When 30 minutes is up, that decision can be extended to another 30 minutes. In this way self-will is built up and strengthened.

With every choice, the next hurdle becomes simpler to achieve.

So, consider starting the new year with a modest resolution that has a short ending date. It is a lot easier to stick to regimen when you know that regimen will end soon. Then, when that date comes, take a short break to reward yourself for achieving it. Then, if you wish, you can start over again on the same goal or switch to a larger one. Breaks and rewards are crucial, because all humans need help being motivated to continue an action over time.
